No Surprise Here.......

Oh, life at Goldman Sachs, the stories continue to unfold. Greg Smith, a disillusioned executive director recently proclaimed to the world that the investment bank he called home for nearly twelve years had lost its way, becoming “as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it.”

I’m not sure what to make of the choice to put this in an op-ed. But I must admit, The mystique of Goldman continues to get tarnished as the reality of the motives behind the firm are brought to light. I have never heard of clients referred to as “muppets” and “axes”, but I cannot say that I am surprised.

I recently met with a longtime client who has crossed the age marker  which requires him to annually take a taxable distribution from his  Traditional IRA. I know he consistently gives offering/tithe to his  church  and  also monetarily supports a few non-profit organizations.  He doesn't necessarily need the IRA income  right  now and would  prefer not taking the withdrawal, since it increases his taxes, but it is the law. Why the love?

     Imagine:  A solid-framed, silver-haired, 79 yr old man walking with intentional pace up a handful of broad stairs on his way to standing on a large platform alone, prepared to present truth from the Living God, as he has done nearly every Sunday morning at 8:30am for the last 50 years....5 decades. Some in the building have been present for nearly all of it.  Most certainly is his supportive, loyal wife sitting on the first row with her petite stature barely reaching the floor looking and listening intently with respect and gratitude.  He comfortably stands behind a large wooden pulpit as he has done over 3,500 times and simply offers: "Let's open our Bibles".
